Masters Thesis: Professional Development of the Arts and Media for Students in Spanish Secondary Education

Abstract

The purpose of this curriculum development is to provide Spanish students in the fourth year of Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) with a Professional Development of Arts and Media course that increases their English level, creative practice, and 21st-century skills. The course follows a Project-based Learning (PBL) format to create an engaging course for English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. It also follows a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) structure to align with Ley Orgánica de Modificación de la Ley Orgánica de Educación (LOMLEO) standards and the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). A review of literature, content analysis and observational research reveals a need for a cross-curricular course, specifically integrating English, Art and Digital Technology to help Spanish students develop in-demand 21st-century skills. This curriculum is intended to be adapted into public and private school systems for ESL students in Spain and has potential for other learning contexts. The course fuses digital literacy, a second language, and creative practice to prepare students for the modern workforce.
