Sneaker culture’s long road from niche 70s obsession to a multi-billion dollar reselling industry. In the past 4 years, I’ve been competing in sneaker competitions in addition to shoe customizations. MARTDK is an artist community that presents unique public events that use art and sneakers as an engagement tool to connect and empower communities and cultures. Their events involve young and emerging artists competing for the best shoe design with only 20 min to create it. Artists from all over Canada and the United States come up with one-of-a-kind designs on sneakers with acrylic markers and are judged in front of a live audience. This hands-on program allows artists to share personalized narratives by using art on sneakers as the canvas.
